Meaning

"And considering your own duty, you ought not to waver. For a warrior, nothing is higher than a righteous war."

Word by word

Sanskrit lesson

Svadharma: the duty that is yours

Sva-dharma: own-duty, not virtue in the abstract. Āvekṣya, having looked at it, na vikampitum arhasi — you ought not to tremble. For a kṣatriya, the verse says, nothing is śreyas beyond a dharmya war. The register has changed. After twenty verses of the self that cannot be killed, Krishna turns to the role Arjuna is already standing in.

Vedas & Upanishads

Kṣatra: a Vedic power, not only a caste-word

Rigveda 10.90, the Puruṣa-sūkta, draws the rājanya from the cosmic man's arms. Bṛhadāraṇyaka 1.4.11 pairs brahma and kṣatra as the two powers that hold a world. Svadharma as a varṇa-rule is later Dharma-sūtra language; kṣatra itself is old. This verse reaches for that older warrior-power and calls it Arjuna's own.

A role that will not wait

Sophocles, Antigone

Antigone chooses burial rites against the city's command. Arjuna's svadharma runs the other way — toward the fight, not away from it — but the structure is the same: a part that will not wait for the person to feel ready. Both plays know duty as something already on you, not something you invent in the hour.

A later echo

The man in the arena

Theodore Roosevelt

Roosevelt's "man in the arena" is the one "whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood," not the critic in the seat. Na vikampitum arhasi is that arena-sentence: look at the duty that is yours, and do not waver for the sake of looking clean. The scorn of the sidelines is already implied; 2.35–36 will name it.
