Meaning

"This wisdom has been stated to you as sāṅkhya. Now hear it as yoga — by which, steadied in understanding, son of Pritha, you will cast off the bondage of action."

Sanskrit lesson

Sāṅkhye / yoge: the same buddhi, a second hearing

Eṣā te 'bhihitā sāṅkhye — this buddhi has been declared to you in sāṅkhya. Yoge tv imāṃ śṛṇu: now hear it in yoga. The demonstrative eṣā points back at 2.11–38; the locatives name two ways of taking the same insight. Buddhyā yuktaḥ, yoked to that buddhi, you will prahāsyasi, cast off, the karma-bandha. The chapter turns here, out loud.

Vedas & Upanishads

Two older rooms, one word for knowing

Sāṅkhya here is not yet the later school with its twenty-five tattvas; it is the enumerative seeing the Upanishads already practice — Katha's two paths, Chandogya's sat. Yoga, from √yuj, is that seeing put to work. Verse 39 does what the older books rarely do: it tells you the method is about to change while the buddhi stays.

Knowing that, and knowing how

Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics

Aristotle splits sophia from phronēsis — contemplative wisdom from the wisdom that acts. Sāṅkhye / yoge is that fork spoken as a change of hearing, not of doctrine. Krishna does not abandon the self that cannot be slain. He asks Arjuna to hear it as a way of doing.
