Pūjārhau: the dual that holds two teachers

Arjuna answers a question with a question: katham — how — do I fight Bhishma and Drona? Pūjārhau takes the dual ending -au, Sanskrit's number for exactly two; the two men he should honour are locked in one small syllable. Both vocatives he picks — Madhusūdana, Arisūdana — mean "slayer." The word-choice is the argument: you slay enemies; these two are not that.

Vedas & Upanishads

The teacher who is not to be struck

Taittiriya Upanishad 1.11 tells the leaving student ācārya-devo bhava — treat the teacher as you would the shining ones. To raise a bow at men who are pūjārhau inverts that Vedic student-rule on the spot. Arjuna is not changing the subject; he is citing the older classroom against the present field.

Guest-friends who cannot fight

Homer, Iliad

In Iliad 6, Diomedes and Glaucus lower their spears when they learn their grandfathers were guest-friends. Honour can forbid a blow as well as demand one. Arjuna's "how can I?" is that older battlefield ethic, spoken from the Indian side of the same problem.
