Sanskrit lesson
Dūreṇa hy avaram: action, measured from below
Dūreṇa, by a long way, karma is avaram — lower — than buddhi-yoga; the instrumental of distance does the scorn. Then the command: buddhau śaraṇam anviccha, seek refuge in the buddhi. Kṛpaṇāḥ phala-hetavaḥ: those whose motive is fruit are named misers — kṛpaṇa a harsh household word. The verse will not call fruit-seeking a small error.

The poorer knowledge, already ranked
Mundaka 1.1.4–5 already ranks aparā below parā. Bṛhadāraṇyaka 3.8.10: whoever, without knowing that imperishable, offers, sacrifices, practices austerity for thousands of years — his work has an end. Verse 49 puts the same ranking inside a single comparison: fruit-motivated action sits far below a buddhi that has taken refuge in itself.

The miser of outcomes
Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics
Aristotle's illiberal man hoards wealth past any use. Kṛpaṇāḥ phala-hetavaḥ hoard the result as motive — a tighter miser, because even a generous spender can be fruit-driven. Both texts use stinginess as a moral shape, not a bank balance.

The poor man is not he who has little
Seneca, Letters to Lucilius
"It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor." Phala-hetavaḥ are that poverty with a ritual face. Seneca writes against luxury; this verse writes against a piety that will not act unless paid.
