Meaning

"When a person keeps dwelling on the objects of the senses, attachment to them grows. From attachment desire is born; from desire, anger."

Sanskrit lesson

Dhyāyato viṣayān: the chain begins with dwelling

Dhyāyataḥ — for one who keeps dwelling, √dhyai, the same root as dhyāna — viṣayān, on the objects. Saṅgas teṣūpajāyate — attachment springs up in them. Saṅgāt sañjāyate kāmaḥ, kāmāt krodho 'bhijāyate: the ablatives start their march, from dwelling to clinging to wanting to anger. The verse trusts you to know why desire becomes anger — it has met a wall.

Vedas & Upanishads

Contact, then thirst — an older anatomy

The Buddhist chain of twelve nidānas walks from contact (phassa) through feeling (vedanā) to thirst (taṇhā) and clinging (upādāna). Verse 62 is a shorter Indian anatomy of the same unravelling, begun at attention: what you dwell on, dwells in you. The Gita will finish the fall in the next line. The older Buddhist list finishes it as birth and aging.

Spinoza, Ethics

Spinoza traces desire and anger from ideas that the mind cannot let go. Dhyāyataḥ is that not-letting-go as a present participle. Both treat the explosion as late. The damage is already in the dwelling.

Cognitive behavioral therapy

CBT's simplest map — attention shapes feeling, feeling shapes act — is this chain without the Sanskrit. Dhyāna here is not meditation as calm. It is rumination as kindling. The clinic and the shloka share the first step: change what the mind sits on, or watch the rest arrive.
