सञ्जय उवाच

sañjaya uvāca

Meaning

Sanjaya says: having spoken thus, Arjuna told Krishna "I will not fight" — and fell silent.

संजय कहते हैं: यह सब कहकर अर्जुन ने कृष्ण से कहा "मैं युद्ध नहीं करूँगा" — और चुप हो गया।

Word by word

Sanskrit lesson

Iti: the quotation mark you speak

Na yotsya iti — "I will not fight," quote ends. Sanskrit had no punctuation, so it grew a word: iti closes speech out loud. Then tūṣṇīṃ babhūva ha, he became silent. The chapter's flattest sentence is also its loudest, because what follows can only begin after the refusal is on the record.

Vedas & Upanishads

Silence as the student's last act

Several Upanishads pause before the teaching: Prajāpati in the Chandogya makes Indra wait years; Bṛhadāraṇyaka's neti neti points past speech. Arjuna's tūṣṇīm is not mystical. It is what is left when argument and request are both spent — the older books treat that quiet as the teacher's cue.

कई उपनिषद् उपदेश से पहले रुकते हैं: छान्दोग्य में प्रजापति इन्द्र को वर्षों प्रतीक्षा कराते हैं; बृहदारण्यक का नेति नेति वाणी के पार इशारा करता है। अर्जुन का तूष्णीम् रहस्य नहीं। तर्क और प्रार्थना दोनों चुक जाने पर यही बचता है — पुराने ग्रन्थ उस शान्ति को गुरु का संकेत मानते हैं।

The rest is silence

Shakespeare, Hamlet

Hamlet's last line is "the rest is silence." Arjuna's silence is not death; it is the space into which someone else can finally speak. Both plays know that a certain kind of talking has to stop before anything true can start.

हैमलेट की अन्तिम पंक्ति है "बाकी मौन है।" अर्जुन का मौन मृत्यु नहीं; वह जगह है जिसमें कोई और आख़िर बोल सकता है। दोनों नाटक जानते हैं कि एक ख़ास तरह की बात बंद होनी चाहिए, तभी कुछ सच शुरू होता है।
