Three times ātman, and then no work
tu turns away from the person of 3.16, whose life was empty and planted in the senses. The new person is one clause said three ways: ātma-rati, delight in the self; ātma-tṛpta, sated by the self; santuṣṭa in the self alone. syāt is optative. This is a kind of person, not a count of people. tasya kāryaṃ na vidyate: for him, no work-to-be-done is found. kārya is the gerundive, what is to be done. The verse does not define which ātman, and it does not say the three phrases are three selves.
Vedas & Upanishads
Seeing the self in the self
Bṛhadāraṇyaka 4.4 says the knower, become calm, sees the self in the self alone — ātmany evātmānaṃ paśyati — and, in the same chapter, that this greatness is not increased by action nor made smaller: na karmaṇā vardhate no kanīyān. The Gita’s person delights, is sated, and is satisfied in the self, and for him no work is found. The Upaniṣad’s verb is “sees.” The Gita’s verbs are delight, satiety, and satisfaction, and then a finding: no kārya presents itself. Same region of thought. Not the same sentence.
