Sanskrit lesson
The first verb, asked again
atha opens the next question, after prakṛti and the pair of rāga and dveṣa were left standing. kena prayuktaḥ: driven by what. prayukta is pra + √yuj, yoked forward — the yoga-root. This person does pāpa even anicchan, not wishing. pāpa is not defined. The verse asks what drives the doing of it. balād iva: by force, as it were. iva is the hedge of 3.2. He does not claim to have seen the compelling. niyojitaḥ, set to it, returns to niyojayasi in 3.1. The question that opened the chapter — why do you yoke me to this terrible action — is now “what yokes a person to pāpa against his wish.”
Vedas & Upanishads
By whom is the mind sent?
Kena 1.1: keneṣitaṃ patati preṣitaṃ manaḥ — willed by whom, sent by whom, does the mind fall to its object? Arjuna’s kena has that shape. The Kena will not let the answer be a faculty, and it walks toward what is not a thing among things. Arjuna asks about pāpa done without wishing, and he asks with iva still on the force. The next verse does not give the Kena’s answer. It names desire and anger.
